Amelia Island, FL - Sean Pittman's wife is due to give birth to twins any day.
But it didn't stop him from traveling the roughly three hours to Amelia Island to serve as host for the Greater Tallahassee Chamber of Commerce Community Conference reception Friday night.
It's the fourth year Pittman has hosted the event. "It's a way to give back to the community and an honor to host the opening reception," he said. Pittman says the reception with an open bar and food will cost somewhere between $5000 and $6000.
"It's a business expense, it's client development, it's being a part of the business community," he said. `Pittman sees great value in the chamber of commerce concept. He's served as a board member for the Greater Tallahassee Chamber.
Less than a year ago, he founded the Big Bend Minority Chamber of Commerce and serves as its chairman "Different business owners have different needs," said Pittman.
Pittman says the Big Bend group has about 100 members as it comes up on its first anniversary in November. "I see merits belonging to both groups, I do," he said.
There's also a third area chamber the Capital City African American Chamber of Commerce. "Big Bend is more regional in nature," said Pittman. "We serve a five county area," he said.
Pittman says about 98 percent of people employed in the Big Bend region in the private sector work for small businesses. "Those businesses need a place to get help," said Pittman. "Events like the one we're hosting are very important," he said.
Pittman also says there are signs the economy is getting better.
Once the reception ends, Pittman plans to make the roughly three hour drive back to Tallahassee to be with his wife as their family awaits the birth of twins.
