Madison County to Change Liquor Laws?
Madison County, FL -- June 13, 2012 --
Marianne Green lives in Madison County and works with MadisonYES.
It's a political action committee pushing for the right to sell liquor in this area.
"There's just a kind of enjoyment of life on a level that a lot of people are ready for here in Madison," Green said.
Currently, in Madison you can sell beer.
But, it's still considered a dry community because it's one of the few Florida counties not allowing the sale of certain types of liquor.
"We had a really fine restaurant that could provide really good gourmet meals but no wines to accompany the courses," Green added.
Residents we spoke with mostly agree with the proposal to allow liquor here. Even Carolyne Mclellan who doesn't drink.
"To me I feel safer with the roads because people are here in Madison they are close to home. If they are going to drink there gonna go to their house," she said.
MadisonYES put together a petition of signatures for the issue to go up for a vote. They reached their goal.
Once they received the required number of signatures, they brought it to the county commission last week and they approved a special election on August 28 where county residents will decide.
"I grew up here and I've never had an anti-alcohol feeling," Green said.
