Sadly, this list is not a fail safe. A registered sexual predator lived across the street from us for 6 months with his mother before the FDLE list was updated. Turned out the predator had properly made the address change, but someone dropped the ball somewhere. FDLE blamed the local Sheriff's Office who, in turn, blamed the FDLE. Mother's intuition told me something was wrong when we noticed the freak outside watching our girls, and he even had the balls to come over and ask questions about them. He was smart enough to not step foot on our porperty, and we were told there was nothing we could do unless he broke the law. Parents must be vigilant and check the list constantly, but know that you cannot bank your childrens' safety solely on this registry.

Doubt it.

The effectiveness of this list is questionable. The rates of sexual abuse certainly have not dropped. Yes, awareness is up and that's a good thing but this list also gives a false sense of security. People believe if they just worry about the registered offenders they will be safe. The problem is that registered offenders only commit a small number of new sex crimes and the real people to be worried about are your uncles, coaches, ministers, teachers and family friends - the people you already know and trust - they are the ones who are committing the new crimes. Sex offences are committed by people of all races, socio-economic levels and backgrounds - not just scary people on a website. Everyone on the registry was a family friend, uncle or trusted person before he (or she) committed their crime.

It is a great idea to notify residents of a community about the sexual predator. However, the residents are so focus on the people on the list that they fail to notice other predators in the community. Everybody has to understand that men and women are predators and you must protect not only your children but yourself as well. This list gives a false sense of security but may create a major problem. Be alert at all times because there is no set description of a predator or any criminal.

There is something very wrong when a society lets a creep like this roam free, looking for his next victim. So what if we know where he lives - do you really think he's going to go "hunting" around there then? Of course not, he'll go elsewhere. And he WILL find another victim, it's just a matter of time.

In many cases, that's true. Offender status can be simply peeing in a park, teenagers with a little age difference experimenting - but to get the label of PREDATOR means this person has done this more than once. Serving some time doesn't fix predatory behavior, and as much as I hate to see people who have served their time continue to be subjected to punishment - in cases of a predator, I have to say there isn't enough time to pass before I'd be comfortable with letting them fall off the radar.

If I had a daughter under 12 (his victim), I'd want to know if he was next door.

Black Flag you are totally incorrect. This list has helped more than you know...MAYBE your ISP should be looked into just in case you haven't registered. Just a thought.

Oh no we're all going to get raped! The "list" doesn't protect anyone. In fact, the "list" is pretty much useless and a waste of money. I don't condone rape or molestation, but if you do some research you'll see the "list" is a huge waste.
