Use the Dave Ramsey approach. There are ten steps to financial stability. The first one is a strong emergency fund. This state has not completed that step yet.

How about a freakin' raise for state workers making less than $50,000 a year?? We haven't had one in 6 years - almost 7 now. If we made a decent living, maybe we could afford to go out to eat again & keep some of those restaurants & other businesses from going under!!!

The state eliminated my position in last years layoffs and it took me over 29 years to build up to that salary with promotions and cost of living increases. Now I have had trouble finding a job, especially considering the additional age discrimination among potential employers and the fact that most of these jobs pay what I earned 25 years ago. I'd like them to pay off my mortgage, and the mortgage of long term committed state employees that the state has just dumped, the ones over 55 years of age, so we do not lose our homes to foreclosure.
