FAMU Fraternity Suspended 5-15

May 15, 2012 by Julie Montanaro

FAMU's band fraternity has been shut down for five years.

The national chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi closed its FAMU chapter because of hazing and uncertainty.

The greek letters Kappa Kappa Psi stand ten feet tall on the edge of the Marching 100's practice field.

The national fraternity announced Monday that FAMU's Delta Iota chapter has lost its charter and will be "closed" for at least five years until May 2017.

"They're not getting any type of funds, because you're not getting any new members, you're not being active at all, so it's like that should give them a sign not to haze anymore, really," FAMU student Gennie Tiena said.

"That's a little much, because, you know, there's other kids that's going to be in high school that's going to impact. Now those kids aren't going to have the same opportunity," FAMU student Mondestin Derelus said.

28 members of the fraternity have been expelled. That includes all undergraduates and pledges from the spring of 2010.

The expulsions come in the wake of allegations that Kappa Kappa Psi pledges were struck and paddled at the home of a FAMU music professor in the spring of 2010.

A statement on the Kappa Kappa Psi web site says the decision was based on "hazing" and uncertainty over the leadership and direction of FAMU's music department.

"I feel like less kids are going to come here because I know a lot of kids on scholarships, band scholarships," said FAMU student Danielle Priester.

"It can encourage other fraternities, also band members and sororities to uplift their policies," said FAMU student Gary Mcelmore,
