The Tallahassee City Commissioners also approved the roundabout at Wednesday night's city commissioner meeting. Commissioner Gil Ziffer says this project has been in the works for almost two years and he was happy to work with the county on this one.
"I think on most things the county government the city government we have a really good relationship," said Ziffer. "This is a county road that clearly we wanted to make improvements on because of the Welaunee development and they were very cooperative."
He added that almost 600 trees will be planted to replace the trees that will be removed for the new roadway.
Tallahassee, FL -- April, 11, 2012 --
Improving the traffic in one part of Northeast Tallahassee means taking down protected trees.
During Tuesday night's meeting, the Leon County Commission approved to putting a roundabout at the intersection of Miccosukee and Fleischmann Roads.
But, officials say in order to do that, they must remove about 115 trees from that Canopy Road Tree Protection Zone.
Heather Sellars lives off of Miccosukee Road. She says, "If I had a choice, I would say I would definitely pick the trees. I think it's one of the prettier roads in Tallahassee and I enjoy the canopy, and I don't really think the traffic is so bad that I would be willing to sacrifice that to put in a roundabout."
County officials say none of the trees being removed are the majestic trees in that area. They say 75 percent of the trees slated for removal are less than ten inches in diameter. The largest is 28 inches.
Officials say no live oak trees will be taken away.
They say they're going to replace the removed trees with more than 600 different plantings.
That will include 31 live oak trees, along with Magnolias and Dogwoods.
There will be one single live oak in the middle of the roundabout.
County officials say the landscape plan is to eventually bring canopy to the entire area.
