Rona Hawkins Jr. died Tuesday night in a fatal car crash. Hawkins was traveling with three other people eastbound on U.S. 98. The driver is unknown at this time.

As the 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee entered a curve it spun counterclockwise and ended up hitting a tree. Hawkins was thrown from the vehicle.

"I say this is a terrible tragedy for the family," said Hawkins' high school football coach David Wilson.

He coached Hawkins for two years at the linebacker position.

"He was a strong kid. He ran well. He covered the field from sideline to sideline. He had tremendous potential.

Aside from being one of the best football players ever to play at Lincoln high school Hawkins' friends say he was a great person off the field as well.

"Rona had a great personality," said his guidance counselor Roshad Thomas. "He was always smiling, had an amazing smile. As tough as he was on the football field as nice as he was off the football field."

Thomas says despite his athletic physique, Hawkins still was a gentle giant.

"Rona although he was very muscular very athletic kind of guy but he would always take the time to help anyone out to talk to anyone to come and hug you and laugh with you."
