Authorities near Los Angeles say the Golden State Freeway will likely be closed for all of today after a huge pileup and fire inside a tunnel.
The California Highway Patrol says 15 trucks were involved and
five big rigs are in flames. At least 10 people have been injured
and at least one of the truck drivers is unaccounted for.
Fire officials say the incident began when two trucks collided
late Friday night, starting a chain reaction on the southbound
truck-only tunnels of Interstate 5.
The injured were among 20 people who evacuated the fiery tunnel
on foot. Authorities say more people could be trapped and they are
trying to conduct a ``methodical search.''
Smoke has poured out of both sides of the tunnel through the
night. Firefighters have doused most of the flames, but they've had
to stay out of the tunnel because of fears it could collapse.
