Free Man Vows to Be Role Model

ATLANTA (AP) - The young man released from prison after being sentenced to 10 years in prison for having consensual oral sex with another teenager says the experience has matured him.

Genarlow Wilson, now 21, told NBC's "Today'' show that he plans to make up for lost time. He was 17 when he was arrested.

In his words, ``I definitely got into this situation a boy and I'm coming out a man.''

He says he learned ``valuable life lessons'' during his time in prison and that he intends to become involved in a non-profit group his attorney has set up to help educate teenagers about sex laws.

Wilson spent more than two years behind bars.

He spoke yesterday to the congregation during a visit to Atlanta's historic Ebenezer Baptist Church. He said he wants to be a role model for his nine-year-old sister and other young people.

Wilson was freed Friday, hours after the Georgia Supreme Court ruled in a 4-3 split vote that his 10-year sentence for having consensual oral sex with a 15-year-old girl amounted to ``cruel and unusual punishment.''
