Judge Rules Against Oregon Teacher Who Wants to Take Gun to School

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) _ A judge in Oregon has ruled against a high
school English teacher who wanted to take her gun to school for
protection.

School district policy prohibits employees from carrying
firearms on school grounds. But 44-year-old Shirley Katz, who has a
concealed weapons permit, says she has the right to carry the
weapon for protection against intruders and her ex husband. He
allegedly threatened her during their divorce but has denied the
allegations.

Katz's lawyer says the school district's gun ban amounts to a
local ordinance. And he contends, under Oregon law, only the
legislature can regulate firearms.

But the judge ruled the district has the right to set policy for
its employees.

The teacher plans to appeal.
