LAFAYETTE, Ga. (AP) - A 77-year-old woman is dead and her 59-year-old son hospitalized after fire destroyed their two-story frame home in LaFayette in northwest Georgia.
A spokesman for the state Insurance Department, Glenn Allen, identifies the victim of last night's fire as Barbara Watkins. He says she lived on the first floor of the house and her son lived on the second floor.
He said Johnson became injured when he went back into the house to try to save his mother and was overcome by smoke. He was taken to a hospital in Fort Oglethorpe in serious condition.
Allen says the fire apparently started in the kitchen shortly after 6 p.m. He says the cause is unknown and still under investigation. He says foul play is not suspected.
