MIAMI (AP) _ A man convicted of taking part in the abduction of a young couple, killing the girlfriend and leaving the boyfriend to die, has been sentenced to consecutive life terms without the possibility of parole.
Cesar Mena had been facing a death sentence. A Miami-Dade County
jury last week recommended Mena be sentenced to life in prison after finding him guilty on one count of murder, two counts of armed kidnapping, two counts of robbery and one count of attempted murder .
Another man convicted in the 2002 attack on Nelson Portobanco and Ana Maria Angel has received a death sentence, and three other men await trial.
Portobanco and Angel, both 18-year-old high school seniors, were walking back to their car after a date when investigators say five men jumped the couple and pushed them into a pickup truck. Angel's body was found along Interstate 95. She had been shot in the head and repeatedly raped. Portobanco survived the attack.
