DOUGLASVILLE, Ga. (AP) _ Authorities say the woman killed in a wreck involving Douglas County Sheriff's Deputy Chris Black was the
wife of a fellow deputy.
44-year-old Tammy Barnwell died in the head-on collision Wednesday while Black was rushing to a call about an armed robbery at Arbor Place Mall. Sheriff Phil Miller says Black's wife had eaten lunch with Barnwell at an event on Tuesday.
The sheriff says Black is "just devastated. He's heartbroken.''
Barnwell was a manager at a Wal-Mart in Douglasville and the wife of Deputy Robert Barnwell.
She died at the scene of the wreck on Georgia 5. Black sustained a broken leg, wrist and ribs and is recovering at Atlanta Medical Center.
The sheriff says the 37-year-old Black was traveling too fast and lost control on a curve, crossed the centerline and smashed into Barnwell's car. He says the deputy did not have his blue lights and siren on.
Miller says he does not know whether Black will be disciplined or charged with Barnwell's death.
