JESUP, Ga. (AP) - The FBI says a Long County couple wanted on two murder charges in Jesup have been arrested near Washington.
FBI Special Agent Tony Alig says 26-year-old William Howard Powell and his wife, 30-year-old Shanmila Melissa Powell, 30, were arrested Friday in a felony traffic stop.
Each of the Powells are charged with two counts of murder and aggravated assault and one count of armed robbery. They are charged in the shooting deaths of 60-year-old Jessie Evans of Jesup, and 35-year-old Donovan Scott of Hinesville.
The Powells also are charged with shooting and wounding Jessie Evans' 29-year-old son, Geno Evans, and 30-year-old Antonio Cunningham of Jesup.
Police say the Powells and Scott are thought to have gone to Evans' home on Tuesday when a shootout happened.
Alig says investigators learned the couple might be in the Washington area based on evidence found Thursday during a search of their mobile home.
The FBI tracked them to a motel in Laurel, Maryland but delayed the arrests to minimize danger to their children, who are 18 months and 10 years old.
Alig says the children had been in the motel but were not with the Powells when the FBI stopped their Toyota Camry and made the arrests.
Alig says because the couple was arrested on a federal fugitive warrant, they have no right to oppose their extradition to Georgia.
