JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (AP) _ A woman charged with fatally shooting
a pregnant pharmacy manager in the head at Shands Jacksonville
hospital was declared incompetent to stand trial today.
A judge ordered Brenda Joyce Coney to be committed to a secure
mental health treatment center.
Coney is charged with first-degree murder for last year's
shooting of 37-year-old Shannon McCants, a married mother of two.
In February, the judge said Coney was competent to stand trial
although two court-appointed mental health experts said she suffers
from paranoid schizophrenia.
Coney entered the busy pharmacy and fired several times on
McCants, according to a police report. Witnesses interviewed after
the shooting said that Coney and McCants argued before Coney
reached for a handgun and shot McCants.
