Crist Speaks On State Performance

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) _ Citizens will find mostly high grades when they check how Florida is doing in public safety, education and four other areas.

But the "Florida Performs'' ratings are based mostly on the state's own data plus some federal and local statistics, rather than non-government sources. Governor Charlie Crist acknowledges the assessments are only as good as the data.

The site includes scorecards showing how Florida is doing in public safety, health-family, transportation, education, economy-taxes and environment-conservation. A color-coded arrow shows the trend for three to seven subjects in each area: green for improving, red for worse and yellow for steady.

The results on the first scorecards are nearly all positive. Twenty of the 35 grades are green arrows. There are only two red arrows, one for access to health care and rehabilitative services and the other for the housing market.
