NEW YORK (AP) _ Police have arrested a relative of the ex-wife
of an orthodontist who was slain in New York City.
New York police say Dr. Daniel Malakov was embroiled in a bitter
custody dispute when he was gunned down last month at a playground
in front of his five-year-old daughter.
Police say fingerprints on a makeshift silencer left at the
scene led investigators to Mikhail Mallayev, who was captured
Saturday afternoon outside his home in suburban Atlanta.
At a court hearing today in Georgia, the 50-year-old Mallayev
refused to sign a waiver of extradition. Mikki Jones, spokeswoman
for the DeKalb County Sheriff's Department says he was ordered held
without bail while officials await a warrant ordering his return to
New York to face a second-degree murder charge.
In announcing the arrest, New York police Commissioner Raymond
Kelly said that Mallayev's wife was related to the victim's
ex-wife, Dr. Mazoltuv Borukhova.
Borukhova, a specialist in internal medicine, has denied
speculation that she was involved in the shooting. New York police
spokesman Paul Browne says detectives are still investigating
whether Mallayev was hired or otherwise induced to commit murder.
