TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) _ A Dollar General management trainee
obtained a new trial today from the Florida Supreme Court, which
reversed his convictions and death sentence for killing two of the
Deltona store's cashiers.
The justices unanimously ruled trial evidence was sufficient to
support Roy Lee McDuffie's conviction for the 2002 murders, but the
state failed to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that some key
procedural mistakes were harmless.
Prosecutors had argued McDuffie killed the clerks to steal money
from the store so he could pay overdue bills.
