Spring Hill Boy Rescued From Collapsed Concrete Culvert

SPRING HILL, Fla. (AP) _ Authorities say a 12-year-old boy is
recovering from minor injuries after a concrete culvert broke and
trapped him in a sandy pit.

Officials say the boy, whose name was not released, and several
other neighborhood kids were digging and playing in a pit next to a
community center under construction in Spring Hill yesterday.

The boy was underneath the slab when it fell, pinning him face
down in the sand, with only his feet sticking out.

Emergency responders used wooden blocks and air bags to
stabilize the concrete, then dug sand from underneath the child.

The boy was flown to a Tampa hospital as a precaution, though it
appeared he didn't have any serious injuries beyond bruises and
cuts.
