NEW YORK (AP) - The American Red Cross has ousted its president. In a statement, the Red Cross said it has asked for and received Mark Everson's resignation today after learning that he had engaged in a "personal relationship'' with a subordinate employee. It said the resignation is effective immediately.
Everson took the job in May, as the charity sought to restructure itself after sharp criticism of its response to Hurricane Katrina.
The statement said the relationship "reflected poor judgment'' and diminished Everson's ability to lead the organization.
The Red Cross' board has appointed the charity's general counsel as interim president and CEO, while a search committee looks for a new leader.
