GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) _ Medical officials say a protester
was killed today as Palestinian police violently broke up a
demonstration in the West Bank against a U.S. Mideast peace summit.
The man was shot in the chest.
The government of Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has banned protests against the conference.
Enforcing the ban, police broke up small protests throughout his
West Bank stronghold.
Meantime, in the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip, tens of thousands of
protesters have gathered in a huge square to rally against the
summit, with many in the crowd chanting "Death to America'' and "Death to Israel.'' The leader of Hamas says the summit is
"doomed to failure.'' Protesters say Abbas is a ``collaborator''
for attending the summit in Maryland.
