NEW YORK (AP) _ A New York judge has sentenced a Florida doctor
to 25 years in prison after he was convicted of conspiring to help
The doctor (Rafiq Sabir) was convicted in May of conspiring to
provide material support to terrorists by agreeing to treat injured
al-Qaida members so they could return to Iraq to battle Americans.
He (Sabir) contends his co-defendant duped him into taking an
oath with an FBI agent who posed as an al-Qaida recruiter. He says
he is ``an extremely gullible man'' and never knew he was pledging
loyalty to al-Qaida.
The judge in the case says such cases deserve a stern punishment
to deter others who would help terrorists. She says were it not for
assistance to terrorists, terrorist acts would not take place.
