2010: Year in Review

Bobby Bowden kicked off 2010 with the last game of his coaching career at the Gator Bowl on January 1st. Tears streamed down the faces of many as the leader of FSU football ran onto the field for the last time.

Five weeks later, tears flowed again, this time for 21-year-old Danielle Brown. She disappeared February 5th. Her body has never been found, but her boyfriend Elijah James is charged with her death.

On a lighter note, folks in south Georgia saw snow on February 12th. It was the first time in more than 20 years that snow fell in the area.

March brought a life sentence with no parole for Andrea Green. He's one of two men convicted of killing confidential informant Rachel Hoffman in a botched drug sting in May of 2008.

Also in March, a bus crash in Gadsden County claimed the life of 17-year-old Dee Dee Murray. Murray's sister and the bus driver were also injured in the crash.

On April 2nd, FSU grad student Vincent Binder went missing. The 29-year-old's body was later found near St. Augustine. Arrests have been made in the case.

Let's also not forget the Deepwater Horizon Oil Rig that exploded and began pumping toxic sludge into the Gulf of Mexico.
The April 20th disaster - which killed 11 and injured 17 others - is considered one of the worst disasters in U.S. history.

The month of April closed out with the death of 28-year-old Sunday Blombergh from Tifton, Georgia. Her in-laws and a family friend are accused of killing her and hiding the body.

May brought more sad news as Joseph and Nancy Militello and their nephew Angelo Rosales were found shot to death in their McAlpine, Florida home.

Another school bus crash also grabbed headlines this month. Jefferson County School Bus driver Ava Mathis died when she lost control of the bus she was driving and crashed into a tree.

September brought many to tears as 6-month-old Zariah Williams was left in a scorching hot car for more than two hours. In infant later died at the hospital. The baby's mother is charged in her death.

September 4th was was a mix of emotions as the Noles played their first football game with Jimbo Fisher at the helm. It was a blowout, with FSU beating Samford 59 to 6.

Then came the arrest of Kathleen Harvey who reportedly made a secret recording of then Leon County Commissioner Cliff Thaell. She gave that recording to Thaell's political rival in the 2010 election, Nick Maddox, though Maddox never used the recording in his campaign. Thaell went on to lose the election.

A wildfire in Clinch county burned nearly three thousand acres of the Arabia Bay. it has since been extinguished.

November was big in politics as Florida and Georgia ushered in new Governors. Many career politicians, including outgoing Florida governor Charlie Crist, also found themselves out of public office.

On November 10th, 64-year-old Manual Raulerson was found dead from a gunshot on the porch of his Live Oak home. Three men were arrested for the crime.

After its cancellation last year, the Veterans Day parade in Tallahassee was back and more grandiose than ever before.

However, November ended on a down note as a mother and her three young children were found slain in their Tallahassee home. It's been more than a month, and police are still searching for leads in the deaths of Brandi Peters, her 6-year-old daughters Tamiyah and Taniyah and three-year-old son Jovante.

On December 8th, Urban Meyer made headlines, when he announced his retirement from Florida football. It's the second time he's made such an announcement. Meyer made the same announcement last year, citing health problems, but he came back to coach this season. This time, Meyer citing wanting to spend more time with family as the reason behind his departure.

On December 17th, 92-year-old Eunice "Sunny" Lester was brutally beaten in her own driveway. Thankfully, she survived and her attacker was arrested.

Then on Christmas Eve, business man Zechariah Morgan of Marianna was stabbed to death and a friend of his was injured. Two men are now in custody.

2010 was also the year we said goodbye to five local heroes:
25-year-old Private First Class Anthony Simmons died on July 8th during his first tour of duty. One week later, 23-year-old Private First Class Brandon King died in an attack by anti-Afghan forces. 30-year-old Sailor David Blake McLendon was killed when the helicopter he was riding in crashed on September 21st, and 25-year-old Army Medic Shannon Chihuahua died saving another soldier on November 12th. All four died while serving in Afghanistan.

Finally, on December 23rd, 39-year-old Lieutenant Cliff Rouse was laid to rest after being gunned down in the line of duty. He was an 18 year veteran of the Doughtery County Police department.
