WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — A judge has ruled that separate juries will decide the fate of four young men charged in a savage gang rape and assault on a mother and her son.
Palm Beach County Circuit Judge Krista Marx ruled Thursday that 18-year-old Nathan Walker and 20-year-old Tommy Lee Poindexter will face trial Aug. 18, while 15-year-old Avion Lawson and 17-year-old Jakaris Taylor will stand trial in September.
The group will be tried in pairs, but each defendant will have his own jury.
The suspects each face life in prison if convicted.
They are accused of gang raping the woman in her apartment in a West Palm Beach public housing complex in 2007. Authorities also say they forced her 12-year-old son to join in the attack. The suspects have pleaded not guilty.
