CHILTON, Wis. (AP) _ A Wisconsin man who spent 18 years in prison for a rape he didn't commit now faces a mandatory life term for murdering a photographer.
Steven Avery was convicted of killing 25 year old Teresa Halbach near his family's salvage yard in rural Manitowoc County on Halloween 2005.
Halbach disappeared after going to the salvage yard to photograph a minivan that Avery's sister was trying to sell. A few days later, Halbach's vehicle was found in the lot under branches, pieces of wood and car parts. Her charred bones were later found in a burn pit outside Avery's home.
Avery's nephew is due for trial next month. He confessed to helping kill and rape Halbach, but later recanted his confession.
Two years before Halbach died, Avery was released from prison after serving 18 years for a rape that DNA analysis showed he did not commit.
