PHOENIX (AP) _ Police in Peoria, Arizona, have surrounded a house where as many as four suspected people smugglers are holed up.
At least 70 suspected illegal immigrants fled the house west of Phoenix Friday night when officers showed up with a search warrant. One alleged smuggler came out with them after officers fired gas inside.
But police say others ran up into the attic and may be armed with assault rifles. Several women are believed to have stayed inside too.
A police spokesman says authorities were tipped to the location after a Michigan relative of one of the immigrants phoned US Immigration and Customs Enforcement to say the smugglers were demanding more money.
The drop house is the second found in the Arizona community this week. Thirty suspected illegal immigrants and four smugglers were picked up Monday.
