WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. (AP) _ A nuclear power generator in upstate New York had to be shut down due to an electrical fault and fire in a transformer.

The fire Friday at the Indian Point Three reactor on the Hudson River about 40 miles north of New York City was put out quickly. And a spokeswoman for the Nuclear Regulatory Commission says there was no release of radiation and no risk to the public.

The incident did prompt declaration of an "unusual event,'' which is the lowest possible safety alert level. And because it was the fourth unplanned shutdown of the reactor since July, the plant's rating will change and bring tighter inspections.

Some officials want an independent safety review at Indian Point before a new 20 year license is granted.

The facility's other reactor is still operating.
