SANFORD, Fla. (AP) - A man locked up after his mother falsely accused him of killing her husband in Sanford is now out of jail.
A judge ordered that 19-year-old DeShane Sands be released yesterday.
He was arrested the day after the killing in May, based largely on reports from his mother.
But court records show that his mother, Rhonda Sands, confessed to killing her husband to neighbors. And although DeShane Sands initially refused to talk to authorities, he later told them he was innocent and suspected his mother was the killer.
DeShane Sands also had an alibi. His girlfriend said he was at her house the night of the slaying.
The judge ordered DeShane Sands released on Monday, but he remained in the Seminole County Jail awaiting transfer to the Orange County Jail where he was charged with violating the terms of probation in an unrelated case. He was finally released yesterday.
It's not clear if Rhonda Sands is still being held on a first-degree murder charge.
