MARIETTA, Ga. (AP) -- A Kennesaw State University student and
illegal immigrant has requested a jury trial for two traffic
citations that led to the discovery of her immigration status.
Cobb County Solicitor General Barry Morgan tells The Atlanta
Journal-Constitution that 21-year-old Jessica Colotl is scheduled
to be arraigned July 2nd.
Her lawyer, Chris Taylor, could not be reached for comment
Thursday.
Colotl was stopped for a minor traffic violation March 29th.
Cobb authorities turned her over to federal immigration authorities
after discovering she was in the country illegally.
Colotl's case became a flash point in the national immigration
debate.
Immigration authorities decided to allow her to stay in the
country for a year to finish her studies.
