State announces May unemployment numbers

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) --
Florida labor officials are hoping that May's unemployment report improves for the second straight month.

The Agency for Workforce Innovation will announce the May
figures Friday.

In April, the state showed unemployment at 12 percent -- an
improvement from March's 12.3 percent jobless rate and the first
time since February 2006 that the monthly numbers had gotten better
in Florida.

The state, however, still remains well above the national
unemployment figure of 9.9 percent.

The impact of the Deepwater Horizon accident on April 20 that
sent millions of gallons of oil into the Gulf of Mexico could
possibly impact the May report. The accident occurred after AWI's
April survey week and were not included in April's report.
