Atlanta-area unemployment grows

ATLANTA (AP) --
The Georgia Department of Labor says the preliminary unadjusted unemployment rate in metro Atlanta rose to
9.9 percent in May, up from a revised 9.8 percent in April.

Department officials say the number of unemployed workers in the
metro area increased to 262,571, up 3,113 from April.

Georgia's seasonally adjusted unemployment rate declined to 10.2
percent in May, down one-tenth of a percentage point from a revised
10.3 percent in April.

In metro Albany the rate rose to 10.6 percent in May, up from
10.3 percent in April. Augusta's rate rose from 8.4 percent to 8.6,
Macon's from 9.9 percent to 10.1 while the rate in Athens remained
unchanged at 7.4 percent.
