OCALA, Fla. (AP) --
A man attacked by an 11 1/2-foot alligator in central Florida remains hospitalized in good condition with a broken jaw.
Peter Butt of High Springs was snorkeling to monitor the flow of
water in a canal at the Silver Springs Nature Park on Tuesday
afternoon when he was attacked.
The 54-year-old was able to swim to safety. A co-worker told a
911 dispatcher that Butt had been "nailed in the neck" by the
alligator.
A trapper captured the alligator, which was euthanized. Wildlife
officials say it weighed 525 pounds.
The owner of Butt's employer, Karst Environmental Services, said
Wednesday that Butt is expected to make a full recovery. State
wildlife officials say Butt is an experienced diver and had been
coming to the same site for months.
