Statement by Governor Charlie Crist Regarding Tampa Police Officers Jeffrey Kocab and David Curtis:

“This morning, two brave and courageous Tampa police officers were caught in the line of fire during a routine traffic stop. Officers Curtis and Kocab exemplify the sacrifice our law enforcement officers make every day as they work tirelessly to keep our communities safe. These men had an innate passion for serving the people of Florida, and our state is better because of their commitment to excellence. I know they will be missed by the Tampa Police Department and the Hillsborough County community. This is a truly tremendous loss.

“My thoughts and prayers are with the families, friends and colleagues of Officers Curtis and Kocab during this difficult time.”
Authorities say the other officer has also died.

Authorities in Florida say a Tampa police officer has died and another is on life support after a shooting during a traffic stop.

A massive search is on for the suspects, a man and woman, who were driving a red Toyota Camry.

Tampa Police Chief Jane Castor announced the death of 31-year-old Jeffrey Kocab at a hospital news conference Tuesday morning. Officer David Curtis is on life support. Dozens of somber officers streamed into the hospital.

Police say one of the officers pulled over the Camry because it didn't have a visible tag. He called for backup because the male passenger in the car was wanted for a misdemeanor.

A few minutes later, police received a 911 call that the officers had been shot.

Police say Kocab's wife is nine-months pregnant.
