NAVARRE BEACH, Fla. (AP) --
Sheets of heavy rain and strong winds have pushed oil and tar further onto sections of Panhandle Beaches.
White-capped waves churned from Hurricane Alex rolled on shore
on Pensacola Beach Wednesday. Front-end loaders, bull dozers,
sand-sifting machines and other heavy equipment stood waited for
breaks in the weather to try and clean the oil-fouled beach. More
than 20 pieces of heavy equipment worked one small section of the
beach. Equipment operators tried to stay dry inside the machinery
between rain bands.
Beach hotel operators and businesses are counting on the beaches
to be open and clean in time for the long holiday weekend.
Dozens of workers with shovels, rakes and plastic sheeting
waited in trucks on the roadside for the weather to clear.
