MARIANNA, FL 11/17/2011 -- Chipola College has been around since 1947. What started as a small community college is now a bustling state college expanding everyday.

Speaking of expansion, work continued Wednesday on the college's brand new Center for the Arts.

Chipola College Theatre Director Charles Sirmon said he can't wait to start teaching classes out of the new building.

"There's really nothing like it in the area, I mean it's a state-of-the-art facility," said Sirmon.

Probably one of the most impressive rooms is the main theatre. There are more than 650 seats total. It even has an underground area below the stage giving performers more than just one way to make an entrance. There's also a black box theatre, dance studio, and art gallery.

Theatre consultant Robert Lorelli played a big part in the entire project and said out of all the buildings he's helped design, this one is one of the best.

"The stage is probably as big as most Broadway stages in New York," said Lorelli.

Construction on the $16 million facility is expected to be done by May and the school said it plans to have a grand opening next September.

Congratulations Marianna, it's nice to see a small town get something that everyone will benefit from.
