Court System Overhaul Bill

The Florida House has accepted the Senate's stripped-down version of a proposed court-system overhaul bill.

The House approved the measure (HJR 7111) by a vote of 80-38 on
Tuesday and made only minor technical revisions. That means it goes back to the Senate for a final review.

Senators most notably eliminated a plan to split the state
Supreme Court into separate divisions for civil and criminal
appeals.

The watered-down version still requires Senate confirmation of
new Supreme Court justices and orders the state panel that
investigates judicial misconduct to share information with the
House. It also asserts legislative authority over the court
system's rule making process.

The changes still require constitutional revisions that have to
be approved by 60 percent of voters on the November 2012 ballot.
