Key West, Fl. --
Authorities say about 20 Cubans found living on an offshore island along the Florida Keys have been detained, and some were receiving medical treatment.

The Monroe County Sheriff's office said in a statement Saturday that the Cubans might have been on the island for several days. Sheriff's spokeswoman Becky Herrin did not know their legal status or how they arrived on the island.

The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commissioned called police and medical units to a boat ramp on Big Coppitt Key, about 10 miles northeast of Key West, at about 4 p.m. Saturday.

The sheriff's office said eight of the Cubans were taken to Lower Keys Medical Center on Stock Island for treatment of minor ailments. U.S. Customs and Border Protection took custody of the Cubans.

@"accuracy" -- Real people make real money by extracting value from the real world, and pay taxes on that money, with that money. The salaries of public "servants" are paid with those tax revenues. The money public "servants" give back to their employer as "taxes" is just a shell game, and further, is diluted by the cost-of-collection. Now that said, any taxes they pay on bribes, kickbacks, and other side income is REAL tax revenue. Conclusion -- you should make up a new user moniker...

This is in response to Accuracy, Elected officials might be paying more taxes but look at the number of Florida citizens, it far out ways the number of elected officials. We are all tired of taking care of illlegals with our money. Their own country will not take care of them, so why should we. We have enough legal residents of Florida that could use the help that all of these illegal aliens get. Opem your eyes and look around, your neighbor might even benefit from some help. Send them all back and start rounding up the other ones that are taking our jobs so that legal residents can support their families and get out of homeless shelters.

are you just mad because you can't get free stuff??????. they are human being regardless of where they come from. WHAT WOULD YOU DO IF ONE OF THEM WAS JESUS CRIST AND HE CAME KNOCKING AT YOUR DOOR, WOULD YOU GIVE HIM BREAD OR SEND HIM AWAY?????

i agree. ship them back. most illegals get not only medical but foodstamps, and cash because they are " seasonal". but i was layed off for my job for a month and had to wait 30 days before i got a denial letter for assistance because i they needed me to go back to the job that laid me off and get a signed paper and fax it back, to wait another 30 days for a response? by that time i had three unemployment checks and was startinf a new job that week. AND I'M LEGAL. what is wrong with that pic. i thought seasonal was temporary, not you come here reap benefits and "forget" to leave?

Really?? This is the problem with South Florida! Hello!! It is like a whole other country down there because we do NOT CLEAN up the place of ILLEGALS living here. If you have not come into our country LEGALLY, you should NOT BE ALLOWED TO STAY!! End of Story. And this giving asylum to Cubans who make it to US shores is ridiculous. ANY ONE OF THEM who is here and NOT a citizen who SPEAKS ENGLISH, should be deported. Why should we as taxpayers have to support them??? Aren't we all sick of this??

Anonymous, your statement, "It's my tax money treating these illegals, not theirs." is inaccurate. Elected officials, whether part-time or full-time, pay taxes just as you do, and may in fact pay more than you do. So, they are spending "their tax money" too. By the way, which of the "other countries" would you most prefer America to be "like". I bet we could help you "relocate".

Why can't America be like other countries? If you try to move to Australia - you need a skill they need -- or you don't get in. If you try to go to Switzerland - you have to prove you have health insurance - or you don't get in. Also you have to show a return ticket out of the country. This is true for most islands in the Pacific. Just try to moving to any. You will find there is a definite time limit and you ain't getting in without a ticket to leave. I'm sick and tired of giving medical care to people who don't belong here just because the elected officials have no brain and can't add. It's my tax money treating these illegals, not theirs. And if they can't see that if you don't put money in the kitty (illegals), then you can't make a withdrawal - then they need to be recalled and kicked out of office for being stupid.

Thomas, Taxpayer, both of you have the right idea, send them back BUT have you looked at the Miami-Dade delegation make-up? Have you noted who was just elected from South Florida? I wouldn't be surprised to see wet-foot/dry-foot changed to EVERYBODY'S WELCOME!

Send their butts back to Cuba for medical treatment. Why should we pay for it? They're ILLEGAL which means they're not our problem.

If they were non-Cubans, they would be deported automatically. But by law, if this island is part of the USA, then these Cubans will be allowed to stay in the US. Unfortunately, this is just another example of the antiquated, racist policy still in effect. Since Republicans are in power in the FL. Legislature and Congress, they need to grow some backbones and change this policy. Forget about wooing the Cuban vote: Illegal aliens should be treated the same and sent back!
