Investigators are waiting for an autopsy to determine how a Florida Gulf Coast University student died while swimming in a lake on the Fort Myers campus.

Lee County Sheriff's Sgt. Stephanie Eller tells the Fort Myers News-Press that 21-year-old Joel Johnson's friends heard him screaming as he struggled in the water early Thursday, but they couldn't see him in the darkness.

Emergency workers later pulled Johnson's body from the 10-foot-deep lake.

Johnson would be the first person to drown in the university's 14-year history. Lifeguards close the lake at 5 p.m. each day.

The Fort Myers school has halted waterfront activities on the lake. University president Wilson Bradshaw says Johnson's death is "an unfortunate and sad accident."
