ATLANTA (AP) -- University System of Georgia officials say the president of Georgia Southwestern State University is planning to retire at the end of the year.

Kendall A. Blanchard says that his retirement will be effective Dec. 31.

Blanchard was chosen as interim leader of the university in Statesboro in January 2007 and was asked to begin serving as university president in June of that year.

Officials say Blanchard and South Georgia Technical College president Sparky Reeves in 2008 created a campaign that has raised nearly $100,000 for local higher education efforts.

University system officials say information on the search for Blanchard's replacement will be announced at a later date.
