MARIANNA, FL 3/7/2012 --

A couple of animal rescues are trying to save a group of neglected horses that nearly starved to death. A good Samaritan spotted the horses in a Bonifay pasture last week.

Hidden Springs Horse Rescue Founder Melanie Higdon is rehabiliting two new rescues this week.

"They're extremely underfed. This one's in a great state of starvation," said Higdon.

The pair of horses are a part of a group of eight found abandoned on a farm in Bonifay last week.

"There was no hay or grain available for them and it was poorly maintained. There was trash and barbed wire on the ground and broken farm equipment," said Higdon.

It was so bad one had to be euthanized.

"My understanding is that horse, because of its state of starvation, layed down and couldn't get back up, it was just simply too weak," said Higdon.

Higdon said the remaining seven are slowly getting better, but unfortunately she told WCTV this most recent incident is not an isolated one.

"With the economy being so bad, there are so many people that cannot afford to take care of their horses and in many instances they can't find a place to put their horses," said Higdon.

She said to fix the problem, it's going to take an improved economy with more jobs and a bigger emphasis on educating people how to properly care for horses.

"You have to be proactive and you have to find out exactly what you need to do if you choose to get a horse," said Higdon.

The Holmes County Sheriff's Office didn't return our calls Tuesday regarding this case. It's not clear if the horses' owner will face animal abuse charges.
