STD Cases in Elderly on the Rise

Sex isn't just for the young. Across the US, statistics show STD cases among the elderly are on the rise.

There's more going on in retirement homes than just dominoes. Statistics from the state health department show AIDS and HIV cases among the elderly have steadily increased over the past 12 years.

Health experts are blaming the increase on a lack of education, a lack of screening and a weaker immune system.

"They don't have to worry about pregnancy, so a lot of older individuals are not worrying about pregnancy so they think, 'Well, I don't need to use a condom,' says Larry Shockley, an STD expert.

"Ummm, Mom, I think there's something that we need to talk about. You've talked about it with me, so I think it's my turn to talk about it with you," says Heather Pugh, an Oklahoma resident.

Health officials are now launching STD prevention programs catered to senior citizens.

Another prevention solution?

"The birds and the bees conversation" reversed.

Exactly what is the point of this article. They are not going to infect the younger generation. So what exactly is the point, is it about Medicare expenses. I think it is about disrespect for privacy. The statistic serves no other purpose.

Isn't moving across generations the reason STDs still exist. Joe(68) sleeps with Sally(51), who sleeps with Jay(52), who sleeps with Sandy(29), who sleeps with Joey (24)...

They all think they are safe. After all, they come from a time where "everyone waited until marriage" and kept "only 1 partner for life" and now that one partner is deceased, they have opportunity to run around like all of us heathen young people. Then they believe that the person they are about to sleep with truly only had one partner so there are no STDs to worry about right?! Hey old people- everyone lies and everyone has sex; Please use protection! (Obviously, I exaggerated some statements to make my point).

Life is short, and when you're elderly it is really short. Might as well live dangerously now that you've lived so long.

I can not think of a more awkward conversation than one where I tell my grandparent to go buy some condoms.

Why don't you just give them a box. They probably can't get to the drug store as easily as you. better yet buy a case every week for the nursing home - just imagine the look on the clerk's face as you buy whole case of condoms every week.
