MIAMI, FL -- October 17, 2011 -

Authorities say a Miami restaurant owner died after becoming overwhelmed by toxic fumes while trying to fix a septic tank.

Miami-Dade Fire Rescue spokeswoman Grisele Marino says the man
fainted inside the tank Sunday.

Marino says another man tried to help the owner, but he told rescue workers that the fumes made him dizzy and he had difficulty moving. Rescue crews transported the restaurant owner to a hospital, where he died.

Marino says the death is under investigation.

The restaurant owner's family identified him as Tomas Gil, the owner of the restaurant Esther's in north Miami-Dade County.

Martha Spillers says her brother had been repairing the tank with a cousin on Saturday. Spillers says Gil decided to work by himself Sunday but fainted as soon as he entered the tank.

He was not an owner if a rest. that just what he did. Tommy was a husband of a wonderful woman,a father of two amazing adults,a grandfather of two beautiful kids,a brother,an uncle,a cousin,a best friend and the base of our family. He loved unconditionally & expected nothing in return. He was one of the last few good people in the world & everyday will be remembered & loved.Death cannot be avoided but can always be cherished. Please remember all the beautiful things in life & forget all the meaningless for in a sec you can lose the "Tommy" in your life.We love you Tommy, today, tomorrow, always and forever.

This is a tragedy that could have been avoided. It is sad that the man lost his life and now his family has to go on without him. Septic tanks, wells, mines all have Bad air caused by methane or other toxins. Leave these things to the professionals.
