DETROIT (AP) -- Authorities say a man awaiting sentencing in an armed robbery is on the run after stabbing a sheriff's deputy several times in the neck and carjacked a motorist while escaping from a downtown Detroit courthouse.

The escape Monday morning prompted a lockdown of the facility and sparked a manhunt.

Court records say the man, identified by police as 25-year-old Derreck White, was scheduled in court Monday to learn his punishment after being convicted last month of carjacking, armed robbery and firearms charges.

Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon says White had a plastic comb that had been fashioned into a shank. He says the deputy is expected to survive.

Police say White stole a minivan from a motorist near the courthouse and later abandoned that vehicle on the city's east side.

A man awaiting sentencing in an armed robbery briefly took a deputy hostage on Monday morning, stabbed another and carjacked a motorist while escaping from a downtown Detroit courthouse, prompted a lockdown of the facility and sparking a manhunt, authorities said.

Court records say the man, identified by police as 25-year-old Derreck White, was scheduled in court Monday to learn his punishment after being convicted last month of carjacking, armed robbery and firearms charges, according to court records.

The deputy, whom White stabbed in the neck, was taken to Detroit Receiving Hospital for treatment, Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon told the Detroit Free Press.

The Associated Press left messages seeking comment from Napoleon's office, and a lawyer listed as a defense attorney for White in the case.

Detroit police Chief James Craig told reporters at the scene that White stole a minivan from a motorist near the courthouse and later abandoned that vehicle on the city's east side. Officers put the Frank Murphy Hall of Justice on lockdown and searched the area near where the van was found.

White may have put on a sheriff's department uniform during the escape, but Craig said it was believed the inmate no longer was wearing it.

The judge's office where his case was listed said it had no information to release.
