New York, NY (AP) - It was another day of quiet but solid gains on Wall Street.

The Dow Jones industrial average is finishing up 45 points at 12,624. The Standard & Poor's 500 index is ending up six at 1,314. And the Nasdaq composite index is closing 19 points higher at 2,788.

Investors have been showing more of an appetite for risk as the economy improves, and they found more reasons Thursday to buy stocks. Unemployment claims fell, and several companies reported stronger-than-expected profits.

The stock market is quietly putting together a strong start to the year. The Dow is already up 3.3 percent, and the S&P 500 is up 4.5 percent.

Rising stocks outnumbered falling ones two-to-one on the New York Stock Exchange. Volume was slightly above average at 4.4 billion shares.

It only took 3 years to turn the country around from the deepest recession since the 1930's. Thank you Mr. President for your wisdom and steady hand. I know this recovery is not what the Rush and Sean whiners want to hear.

I agree, but the whining hateful people will still unload on Obama. They're hateful people incited by Rush and Sean. I feel sorry for them.

The recovery would have come a lot sooner if Obama had done nothing 3 years ago instead of building turtle tunnels and other useless things and putting the country deeper in debt. Who in their right mind would borrow money to build a turtle tunnel? Maybe you don't want to answer that. Notice I didn't say that anybody else would have done something better, what I said is that we should have not spent money just to spend money because it doesn't work, it just puts us deeper in debt.
