SAN FRANCISCO, August 13, 2013 -- A national pollinator census needs the public’s help to count bees on August 17. The Great Bee Count is an annual event that encourages the public to support the vital population of North American pollinators.

Founded by San Francisco State University biologist Gretchen LeBuhn, the Great Bee Count is part of the Great Sunflower Project, which has created the single largest database on pollinator populations for North America with more than 100,000 volunteers counting bees year-round.

Members of the public can report pollinators anywhere – from a single backyard plant to an entire hiking trail or local park – and upload their findings to
