[UPDATE] 6-17 7:24am - WASHINGTON, D.C.

A steady crowd posed for pictures outside Anthony Weiner's office before it gets packed up for good.

"I am announcing my resignation from Congress"

With cheers from hecklers... the New York Congressman stepped down Thursday three weeks after his embarrassing sexting scandal first unfolded.

Democratic leaders welcomed the move... but reaction among Weiner's constituents is mixed.

One New Yorker says:

"I think he was just bamboozled into resigning. It was just wrong."

Another is glad the Congressman has resigned.

"What he did was disgusting and inexcusable and I'm happy that he stepped down."

While the 46-year-old's Congressional career is over... his job serving the public may not be.

Rep. Anthony Weiner says:

"I got into politics to help give voice to the many who simply did not have one. Now I'll be looking to others ways to contribute my talents to make sure that we live up to the most New York and American Ideals."

On Capitol Hill, Weiner's downfall could end up being a boost for republicans if they can snatch that house seat from democrats.

Rep. Peter King (R) New York:

"I genuinely believe a republican has a chance to win that district. It will be tough it's a democratic district."

Under state law... a special election must be held to fill the seat.

Weiner is the third New York lawmaker in little more than year to resign in disgrace.

[UPDATE] 6-16 2:33pm - NEW YORK (AP) --

Embattled New York Congressman Anthony Weiner announces his resignation from Congress.

[UPDATE] 6-16 10am - WASHINGTON (AP) --

Sources tell The Associated Press that embattled Rep. Anthony Weiner is telling associates he will resign amid the furor over his sexually charged online relationships with several women.

The married seven-term New York Democrat's resignation would end
a once-promising career as a leading liberal voice.

Weiner became embroiled in a scandal over lewd photos and
messages sent online to at least six women. During a tearful news
conference recently he admitted he had told a series of lies to
cover up his bad behavior.

Top Democrats had called for a House ethics probe to see if
Weiner had broken any rules, including whether he may have abused
his congressional office.

Congressman Anthony Weiner is fighting to save his political life after an embarrassing admission.

Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-NY) says, "I haven't told the truth. And I've done things I deeply regret."

The married New York lawmaker admits he tweeted a sexually explicit photo to a Seattle woman and then lied about it. Weiner is now facing a possible congressional ethics investigation and he's
getting a dressing down from of his closest allies, including House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi.

The congressman admitted to inappropriate online exchanges with six women but says he will not resign.

"I don't see anything that I did that violates the rules of the House," says U.S. Rep. Weiner.

Up until now, Wiener had been a rising star, even touted as a top contender for New York City Mayor. Now he's hoping to hold onto his congressional seat. He's been an outspoken liberal voice but this scandal may compromise his ability to influence legislation.

John Dickerson, a CBS News Political Analyst, says, "He will no longer be able to do that for a long period of time until this blows over. This may be many years if he survives."

Weiner came clean nearly two weeks after he claimed someone hacked into his Twitter account and only after Conservative blogger Andrew Breitbart posted explicit pictures of Weiner on his website.

Breitbart says, "I think we are heading down the path to truth. I think perhaps he has offered a limited version of the truth."

And that damage may not be done . Breitbart is warning Wiener he'll post an x-rated photo if Weiner tries to retaliate.

And will go laughing, all the way to the bank. We need to strip him of his retirement and any other perqs he will get as a result of being in Congress. Funny thing is, when Obama was asked about Weiner he said if it was him he would resign. Has anyone asked why he hasn't because of his disastrous and failed policies?

The Louisiana congressman is caught in a prostitution ring, Newt Gingrich married the woman he was having an affair with, Justice Thomas's wife was given money by a political group involved in a trial her husband was presiding over, and Rep. Weiner is forced to resign for sending lewd pictures. Every politician has dirt. It just on who's dirt gets kicked up.

You know, there is a difference in digging up dirt...and bringing your own shovel.

Not quite sure what you mean. You are trying to make a point by being clever but it makes no sense in this case. The only metaphorical shovel Weiner brought was to throw dirt back in the hole.

Wow! This guy sent nude pictures to several women, including a seventeen girl, lied about it repeatedly, blamed it on a right wing conspiracy, and the resident WCTV leftists STILL denfend the guy? Amazing but typical.
