Alleged White House Shooter Found Competent

Washington, D.C. (AP) - A man accused of firing shots at the White House in an attempt to kill President Barack Obama is competent to stand trial, according to a preliminary psychiatric screening. But federal prosecutors filed a motion Monday requesting more extensive tests in the event that his mental health becomes an issue.

An initial, 50-minute evaluation by a court-appointed psychiatrist found that Oscar Ramiro Ortega-Hernandez is competent to understand the proceedings against him and to help with his defense, according to the prosecutors' motion.

Ortega, a 21-year-old native of Idaho Falls, Idaho, is accused of using an assault rifle to fire up to nine shots at the White House on the evening of Nov. 11, when Obama was out of town. He fired the shots at long range from the window of his Honda sedan, authorities said. One bullet smashed into a window of the living quarters of the executive mansion but was stopped by ballistic glass.

Ortega is one of a handful of people ever accused of trying to assassinate the president, a charge that carries a potential life sentence. He has referred to Obama as the Antichrist and told acquaintances he "needed to kill him," court documents show.

On Monday, a federal judge granted a defense request to delay Ortega's preliminary hearing to give attorneys time to argue whether he should undergo additional screening. Ortega is due back in court Dec. 12.

In their motion, prosecutors said they did not dispute the finding of competency. But they argued a full psychiatric screening is warranted "given the serious nature of the criminal charges pending against the defendant and the likelihood that mental health issues may arise in the course of these proceedings."

The long-haired, bearded Ortega, wearing a blue prison jumpsuit, said "Yes, sir," during Monday's brief court appearance when asked if he understood the proceedings. He is being held without bond.

W.H. Shooter Charged with Attempting to Assassinate Pres. Obama

PITTSBURGH (AP) -- November 17, 2011

An Idaho man charged with firing two shots at
the White House last week has been charged with attempting to
assassinate President Barack Obama or his staff.

Ramiro Ortega-Hernandez, of Idaho Falls, Idaho, will be taken
back from a federal court in Pittsburgh to face the charges in
Washington, D.C.

Ortega will remain in federal custody at least until a
magistrate in Washington can determine if he should remain jailed
until his trial on the charge, which carries up to life in prison.

The 21-year-old Ortega said only, "Yes, ma'am" when he was
asked if he understood that he would be going back to Washington to
face the charges.

If Obama wins this next election there will not be another presidental election. Him and his Muslim buddies are in the house now. He will make sure that he rules the USA for ever more. People we are looking at another Hitler and Germany. It is the same thing. We let him in the door and he is not leaving.

Good lord, if the comments on this board are indicative of the mentality of the average voter, we are truly and 100% screwed. You people on both sides of the political spectrum are the biggest collection of morons, displaying the most idiotic and simplistic "reasoning skills" that I have ever witnessed in all of my years on this planet. No wonder this country is in the shape it's in right now. I almost wish that I could believe in god, just so I would have someone to blame for the existence of the simpletons here.

I agree. However, I believe that the average voter is not a moron, yet. Give it a few more years, they're breeding at a much faster rate than the non-morons.

A hit? What was he aiming for? a house? He missed everything but a house, I wouldn't exactly call that a success.
  • by WellNow on Nov 28, 2011 at 05:23 PM
Well now that the shooter has been found competent perhaps it is time to test the people who accuse him of trying to assassinate someone 2000 miles away from where the shots were fired. I mean common. If I shoot a gun up in the air am I trying to kill the man in the moon? No doubt according to Obammy supporters and his cronies in the DOJ I am indeed. THAT should be a crime.

In reading most of these comments, its a wonder why this country and our society is in the condition its in. This story is about a sick idiot shooting at a building because he hates someone and he is infatuated with his birthday. Yet it seems alot of you agree with his form of thinking. I didnt like either Bush, but I would never think or want anyone to harm him or his family.

Maurice you are a hypocrite. ALL of this banter started when the liberals on this board started blaming the Tea Party for this idiot's actions. Get a life and learn how to proof read.

Had to blame you tea party types because you were too cowardly to own your own. What about a gun-loving nutcase firing an automatic weapon at the White House and hitting same does the tea party disagree with? This man is your idol of American patriotism. Reload!

I didn't think there was anyone in the United States dumb enough to vote for him in the last election, but obviously there were. And I'll guarantee you he will get 100% of the welfare vote. That's why he wants more of them. Never count on the American people to be logical. Count on them to be self serving. Years ago we had those who were selfless, now we have a "gimme" crowd that needs to have the public trough taken from them and a requirement that they work to eat. See how many of those now "unable" to work find they really are.

All this noise about a moron? It doesn't matter if he was right, left,or twisted,he won't have to worry about housing, food,or a job for quite a while. The prison industry is unaffected by economical concerns, they'll make room for him.

I don't listen to Rush and Sean, but I doubt they had a moment of silence to honor and show solidarity with the shooter. No sir, you have them mixed up with the Occupy San Diego crowd. The leftist media can spin it until the next century, but they will not find where the idiot shooter is connected to the Tea Party. He probably has no connection to any political group, Tea Party, Occupy, or otherwise. He is just a mentally ill person who went bonkers.

Attempting to assasinate Odumbo? You need a target to have an attempt. Have you ever seen anyone charged with attempted murder by shooting a door? Normal people get SHOT and the perpetrator gets charged with aggravated assault more times than not. I smell a rat and not just the one stinking up the White House.

How? There isn't a fool in the United States dumb enough to vote for him. I can hope my fellow Americans have the intelligence to remove the idiot from office. I am amazed that the Democratic Party is allowing him to run a second time. He has no chance. He is the worst President in US history.

No, I think you're confusing him with Bush II who attacked the wrong country after 9/11 and blew the quarter trillion dollar surplus left by President Clinton. After that, he proceeded to put us in a $2 TRILLION dollar deficit which caused the hemorrhaging of jobs and an economic and financial train wreck worse than the great depression. This makes W the worst president in history by far.
