Shots are exchanged between a police officer and a Tallahassee man -- again. This incident is the fourth officer-involved shooting in Tallahassee in six weeks.

Tallahassee resident Ms. Willie Menter Hunter says she was awakened early Thursday morning and looked outside of her window. She says, "It just woke me up. The lights shining all over the house. The street was just full of police. I don't know if any were at the station or not because it was so many here on this street."

A man was shot near Hunter's home on Volusia Street around 3:05 a.m.

Police say an officer patrolling near Joe Louis Street noticed a man walk through the woods to Volusia Street. TPD says because of the late hour, the officer wanted to talk to the man. Officers say the man ran, then turned and shot at the officer, and the officer shot back.

The man was taken into custody. Police say he was injured, but, they say they had not determined if the injuries were from the officer's shot or from a previous incident.

Greg Jefferson lives nearby. He says his doorbell woke him up around 3:30 a.m. He says, "It was the officers at my door. They were wanting to know, wanted me to check my house to make sure no bullet holes had went through it."

There weren't any bullet holes in Jefferson's home. But, the vacant house a few doors down looks like it has two bullet holes on the side of it.

Things were clear by late morning, early afternoon. But, around 1:00 p.m., investigators with the forensic unit returned to the scene and blocked off the area again.

After putting crime scene tape around about three houses on the 1000 block of Volusia Street, the detectives grabbed yard rakes and started raking the yards. Some officers were searching the ground on their hands and knees, presumably looking for evidence.

The officer, who has not been identified, has been put on administrative leave per policy.

The shooting happened on the same day that a community town hall meeting was scheduled to discuss recent shootings in Tallahassee. The meeting started at 6 p.m. Thursday at New Birth Tabernacle Church on Harlem Street. TPD Chief Michael DeLeo, City Commissioner Andrew Gillum, and other community leaders were expected to address resident concerns.

According to Tallahassee Police, TPD was in the area of 1700 Joe Louis St. around 3 a.m. Thursday when they observed a male walking out of the woods. Police say, because of the time of night, the officer attempted to talk to the male. The male fled and the officer followed him into the yard of a residence.

According to Tallahassee Police Spokesperson Dave Northway, it appears at this time that the suspect turned and fired at the officer, and the officer returned fire. The suspect continued to flee but officers were able to take him into custody.

The suspect had a minor injury but it is unknown at this time if the injury is related to this incident or an earlier injury. The suspect is at a local hospital.

The officer has been placed on administrative leave, which is department policy. No bystanders or officers were injured in this incident.

This is the fourth TPD involved shooting in the last six weeks.

We will provide more details as they become available.
