[UPDATE] Woman Claims Self Defense, Murder Charges Dropped

UPDATED 5.22.2012 by Julie Montanaro

A woman accused of stabbing her boyfriend to death is set free.

Prosecutors dropped the charges against Angela Prim today just as she was poised to stand trial.

Prim was scheduled to stand trial Tuesday for stabbing her boyfriend to death back in 2008.

She has claimed all along that she was the victim of domestic violence and killed Christopher Girdner in self defense.

Now more than four years later, the prosecutor agreed to drop the charges.

"Was this self defense?"

"Yes."

"Was this your last resort?"

"Yes. It was really ... like I didn't want to plea or anything because I didn't want to say I did something I didn't do, but I really didn't want to go to prison either," Prim said afterward.

"The important thing here is that now Angela can get on with her life and not have to worry about going to prison and being separated from her children," said defense attorney Steven Been.

The confrontation and stabbing happened at a home in Woodville in February 2008.

Prim told deputies she hid the keys to stop Girdner from going out to buy cocaine. That's when he started to attack her, she said, and she fought back.

Prim was charged with second degree murder.

The prosecutor - who was assigned the case just a few months ago - says after reviewing all the evidence he couldn't prove that beyond a reasonable doubt.

"At this time, the state announces a nolle prosse," Robert Hale said in court.

In court papers filed Tuesday morning, Hale pointed out that Prim called 911 right away. He noted the couple had a history of domestic violence and acknowledged Prim was injured in the confrontation too.

"The defendant could not be expected to simply stand there and take another beating from Mr. Girdner without adequately protecting herself," Hale wrote.

"When they did really get into the case, I think they realized that this was clearly an innocent person that shouldn't be prosecuted. They did the right thing," defense attorney Steven Been said.

"Are you surprised that it took four years to reach this point?"

"Yeah. (laughs) Four years is kinda ridiculous, really," Prim said.

The prosecutor had no comment on why it took this long to drop the charges.

The defense attorney said heavy caseloads and turnover certainly haven't helped.

A check of court records lists two defense attorneys, four judges, six prosecutors and seven different trial dates.

Prosecutors have dropped charges against a Leon County woman accused of killing her boyfriend.

Angela Prim wiped away tears as the judge wished her well.

Prim was slated to stand trial this week for the 2008 stabbing death of her boyfriend Christopher Girdner.

Prim was charged with second degree murder, but maintained all along that she stabbed him in self defense.

Prosecutor Robert Hale says after consulting with the lead investigator, blood stain expert and medical examiner he could not in good faith go forward with the case.

In paperwork Hale filed this morning, he said, "The defendant could not be expected to simply stand there and take another beating from Mr. Girdner without adequately protecting herself."

Prim said she is relieved and anxious to move on with her life.

A judge Friday refused to dismiss murder charges against a woman who claims she stabbed her boyfriend to death in self-defense.

Thirty-year-old Angela Prim is accused of killing Christopher Girdner at her mother's Woodville Home back in February 2008. She claims that she was defending herself against domestic violence.

Prim's trial is now set to begin in April 2010.

Two doctors were called as witnesses today 10/2/09 to testify; one on behalf of the defense, the other for the state attorney.

Prim is accused of stabbing Christopher Girdner to death back in February, 2008 at a home on Casey Drive in Woodville.

Prim was planning to take the stand this morning, but decided not to after consulting with her defense attorney.

The psychologist testifying for the defense, told the court what Prim had told her about the day leading up to the murder.

She also explained what could have been the cycle of domestic violence that Prim said she was the victim of before stabbing her boyfriend.

A Leon County woman accused of killing her boyfriend was in court Friday trying to get those charges dropped.

29 year old Angela Prim is trying to convince the judge that she acted in self defense that day and should be immune from prosecution.

Some 20 witnesses were called to court Friday to testify on her behalf.

Prim is accused of stabbing Christopher Girdner to death back in February 2008 at a home on Casey Drive in Woodville.

Prim's mother said she repeatedly noticed bruises on her daughter's face, hip and wrists, but could never get a straight answer from her about how they got there.

The hearing will continue next Friday.

While I have too been a victime of domestic violence I will say that if this was not a case of self defense then there is one witness that can't be silenced. Either way you hate to hear that a person lost their life because of their addiction or otherwise. Only God can be the judge and jury now and if this death was not a result of self deffense then unfortunately this young woman will have a true day in court when she is called by God. Because we are human we tend to get caught up in our worldly feelings and become quick to judgement but we should remember their is 1 supreme being that knows sees all and has already created the resolution. Just because we may not see it does not mean it is not there. I do however agree that 4 years is a long time and it's sad that children suffered as a result of our lax justice system.

Quit using the Prim name. Your ex-husband is and was too good for you. Angela is a thief and a murderer. she and her lawyer drug this case out for so long. she got pregnant so she wouldn't go to trial when it was scheduled. so postponement after postponement. sad day no justice.

Yep, that's why our legislature needs to make a law that disallows such dragging out of cases in order to scare citizens to death about defending themselves. Prim obviously had prosecutorial misconduct, along with two judges who should have seen no factual basis for murder charges over three and one-half years ago. Meggs has always dragged his feet and shown that he will prosecute those simply trying to defend themselves. Oh, that is government's job only, right Meggs? Yeah, right. The police will be there exactly 30 minutes after a victim's throat is slit.

Another case that blocks all arguement. Had this been a man killing a woman, he'd be dead already from affixiation because there is no air UNDER a jail - waiting his trial. OHhhhh, look at that sad little face.. how could she possibly be guilty? Little Princess......!!!!!

Well, I thought she was guilty, but if the prosecutor dropped the case, the obviously I don't know the whole story. I don't think they prosecutors would have dropped the case if they thought there was any chance of them winning.

So a black woman in Jacksonville, Marissa Alexander claimed self defense when she shot at her husband (who was not hit) after being abused for years. She just got sentenced for 20 years in prison. What kind of disgusting, racist society do we live in?

WHEN will people learn the difference between RACISM and PREJUDICE....Only institutions that exert power over society, such as judicial courts, can be "racist"...a person saying that they don't like someone because the color of their skin or saying that something is racist makes one "prejudice"....If we are going to start blaming each other for society's ills, LET'S GET THE TERMS CORRECT PEOPLE!!!!

That is easy to answer. One was a woman who clearly endangered no one but the one who threatened her. The other endangered her children. One ended the threat as it occurred. One went back after having "escaped" successfully thus CREATING the circumstance where she could . . . endanger others. Need I go on? I certainly could. In short; the only similarity is the one you fabricate in your head to perpetuate your chosen perspective that you are being oppressed when in fact YOU are the only one oppressing YOU.
