Associated Press Release

CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) -- Two cities along the Gulf of Mexico are suing oil giant BP over tens of millions of dollars in lost tax revenues from the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

Dunedin and Clearwater join other local governments such as Tampa and Hillsborough County, along with the state of Florida, that are also suing BP.

The Tampa Bay Times (http://bit.ly/ZmJrjK) reports that the lawsuits from Clearwater and Dunedin were two of nearly 60 suits that South Carolina-based law firm Motley Rice filed Friday in U.S. District Court in Louisiana.

The cities claim they suffered millions in losses from hotel, gas, sales and other tax and fee receipts because of the spill. No oil washed into the Tampa Bay area but the cities say visitors were scared away.

Tallahassee, FL - Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi says the lawsuit is the first step in a long process.

She says, "It's astonishing to me considering the harm that BP has caused our state and our people. Floridians deserve better and we are going to receive it from BP."

Bondi says four firms have been hired for outside counsel. She says if the case makes it to trial, it will be tried in Florida, "where it belongs."
